How to Obtain a Firearms Licence in NSW

– Be a NSW resident or about to become one.
– Be 18 years of age or over.
– Ensure you do not have disqualifying criminal history or orders that would prevent you from holding a licence.

Choose from one of the eight genuine reasons for possessing and using a firearm, including:

– Sport/Target Shooting
– Recreational Hunting/Vermin Control
– Primary Production
– Vertebrate Pest Animal Control
– Business or Employment
– Rural Occupation
– Animal Welfare
– Firearms Collection

Note: Personal protection or the protection of another person does not constitute a genuine reason for possession and use of a firearm. Additionally, the protection of property does not constitute a genuine reason for possession and use of a firearm, other than for the genuine reason of Business Security Industry. 

– Enroll in and complete a firearms safety training course from an approved provider. In 2024, Razorback Outdoors will be offering firearms safety training courses.
– Obtain a certificate upon successful completion.

– Create or log into a MyServiceNSW Account.
– Provide proof of identity documents (ensuring the name matches exactly with your Service NSW account).
– Provide your firearms safety training certificate or details of your previously held or current interstate firearms licence.
– Provide supporting documents for your genuine reason.
– If applying for a licence above category A, provide evidence of a ‘special need’.
– Have a current credit card ready for payment of applicable fees.
– There is a mandatory 28-day waiting period for all new applications, though some may take longer to process due to thorough reviews for public safety.
– Ensure all requested information is complete to avoid delays.
– Familiarize yourself with the general legislative requirements of the Firearms Act 1996 and Firearms Regulation 2017.
– Prepare to meet safe storage requirements for the category of licence and type of firearm you will possess.
– Once approved, you will receive your licence, valid for either 2 or 5 years depending on your selection and payment.
– Regularly review and adhere to all conditions and responsibilities, including safe storage and handling of your firearms.
– Fee exemptions may apply to primary producers and pensioners under certain conditions.
– Continuously ensure that you remain a fit and proper person to hold a firearms licence.
